Using the Bible Quilt® Journal to Nurture Grandchildren in a Creative Way

Written by Dianna Mills, creator of the Bible Quilt®️ Journal

Bible Quilt® journaling is a unique way to weave more scripture into your own daily life, and an enriching process to share with your grandchildren. It can be used as an interactive family activity to supplement any Bible study or Bible reading plan.

As moms and grandmas, we pour into our kids in multiple ways, don’t we?

One of the most important ways is to cultivate their spiritual growth. We have to be grounded in the Word ourselves to nurture children well.

The Bible Quilt® journal is an intentional strategy of seeking out scriptures on a particular theme, such as Prayer, to create pages that we can use as a resource for personal growth as well as to encourage others through scripture.

This link, What is a Bible Quilt® Journal?, describes the product, but it’s the process that demonstrates the kingdom work being done through these Bible Quilt® Journal (BQJ) pages.

Many women create BQJ pages dedicated to issues they are praying over for their family members. As they “harvest” verses in a personal way, they develop tangible pages of scripture in their own handwriting that reflect their own prayers and devotional time in the Word.

These beautiful Bible Quilt® Journals are becoming part of a spiritual legacy that will benefit families for years to come.

Some ladies invite their grandchildren to join them in their Bible Quilt® journey, engaging with them during special craft times and gathering up verses together like they’re on a perpetual treasure hunt through the Bible.

Long-distance grandparents are utilizing technology to share scriptures with their grandkids across state lines and connecting with them creatively in the Word.

For example, they can read the Lord’s Prayer together then make a BQJ page on it while they discuss the meanings of the words and phrases. They can take photos of their pages and text them to each other, delighting in one another’s progress.

Isaiah 55:11 reminds us that God’s Word “does not return void” and Hebrews 4:12 tells us that “the Word of God is living and active.” Many Bible Quilters are experiencing these revelations in personal ways.

A Bible Quilter in Houston sent ABC Bible Quilt® journals to her granddaughters in New York early in the pandemic, then had virtual Bible Quilting sessions with them weekly for several months.

Recently when this Grandma suffered the loss of a dear friend, her 9-year-old granddaughter texted her a verse from her first BQJ page, encouraging her with Nehemiah 8:10  The joy of the Lord is my strength.” Shortly afterward, her 6-year-old granddaughter sent her a scripture from her own BQ journal.

This grateful Grandma shared the sweet story with me, adding  “…because of your Bible Quilt®  journal, I was able to sow God’s Word in their hearts and here they are returning it to me. I love this because at their young ages they already know where to go when we are sad…God’s Word.”

That is the foundational premise of the Bible Quilt® journal: hiding God’s Word in our hearts. We do this in a creative way that slows us down and engages us fully. Each journal becomes a treasured resource of favorite scriptures and is a reflection of the Bible Quilter’s unique personality.

Grandparents play a unique role in their grandkids’ spiritual development and can personalize BQJ pages to encourage them in a special way.

In addition to the original Bible Quilt® journal, a few other versions are now available so you can choose the one the best fits your journaling style and age of grandchildren.

For those who like having a structured plan, the Month-to-Month BQJ offers formatted pages for a whole year and you can follow along with the BQJ community as we focus on a monthly, such as Wisdom or Love.

The ABC Bible Quilt Journal is a fun way to get younger children engaged. You can focus on a letter-of-the-week to keep your momentum going.

For those who want an innovative way to take sermon notes, Bible Quilt Notes is designed to give you a fresh jumpstart on note-taking.
