Question:
My daughter and son-in-law have announced a pending divorce that was quite unexpected to the rest of us. I’m very concerned about the impact this will have on my grandchildren as well. What do you recommend?
Response:
I am sorry to hear that you are going through this unexpected event and I understand your concern for your grandchildren.
At this point, the best you can do is pray for your daughter, son-in-law, and their children. You can continue to have positive regard for your son-in-law, but you need to be available to provide support to your daughter and grandchildren.
Be someone they can talk to openly and be willing to hear their thoughts and feelings. Listen to the practical needs they have and try to help meet those needs when you are able.
I could say much more but the VP of Marriage at Focus on the Family, Dr. Greg Smalley, wrote an excellent article on this topic and it provides everything that I would have suggested and more so I think you will find it very helpful. View the article at this link!
Finally, be sure to take care of yourself as you are experiencing a significant loss in your family so you need support as well. Talk with trusted family members and friends or seek professional counseling if needed.
