Question:
I’ve noticed that my 8-year-old granchild is confused because one of his parents believes in Christianity while the other doesn’t. What are some ways I can help?
Response:
It would be best for you to talk with the parents. Let them know what your grandson has said that indicates to you that he is confused. Encourage them to talk with him about his confusion answering his questions using age-appropriate language.
This is not a time for parents to provide lengthy answers that explain their belief or lack of belief in Christianity. It is a time to let him know that mommy and daddy can disagree and that it is ok for him to continue to ask questions.
You might want to ask their permission to share a book with him such as The Case for a Creator For Kids by Lee Strobel. This book answers the questions children most often have about God in language appropriate for 6-10-year-olds.
Your goal should be to show respect for his parents and keep the lines of communication open with them so you can be a trusted resource for them as well as for your grandchildren.
Also, don’t forget to pray that God will soften the heart of the unbelieving parent, and provide friends and others who know the Lord and can disciple them.
