The Role of Grandma – Be a ‘Pointer’

In a couple of my posts I’ve been talking about the ‘role’ of the grandma (and the grandpa, too). I believe grandmas need to be prayer warriors and prayer teachers as we pray for our grandchildren and also teach them to pray. I believe we need to be students of our grandchildren and know what makes them ‘tick’. I believe we need to be mirrors who reflect a positive view to our grandchildren of who they are; loved gifts from the hand of God!

I also believe we need to be ‘pointers’ who are focused on intentionally pointing them to Jesus. This is vitally important for us to do, because if they do not choose to love, know and follow God, then nothing else matters. We need to do this from their youngest ages and throughout their lives when we…

  • Sing the classics – “Jesus Loves Me”, “Jesus Loves the Little Children”, etc. and tell our sweet grandbabies how much Jesus loves them!
  • Read Bible picture books to our young grandchildren and tell them how Jesus loves them so, SO much!
  • Walk in a park and talk about how God created the world and He created them to be the boys and girls they are!
  • Speak blessings into their lives throughout their lives.
  • Have them help with service projects to help others.
  • Pray with them about an upcoming test, or when other children have been unkind, or about what college they will attend.
  • Send them a care package at college with Bible verses and reminders of how you are praying for them.
  • Pray for them and their new wife or husband, and for the new life they will be building together.
  • Greet your great-grandbabies and continue to point them all to Jesus!

These are just a very few of the many ways you can point your grandchildren to Jesus. Yes, being a ‘pointer’ is an important role for grandma… and grandpa. Always be ready to lead them to Jesus – then get ready to celebrate!

So, what view of your grandchildren do you give them? Do you see yourself being a ‘pointer’ who points them to Jesus as part of your ‘role’ as grandma? Why, or why not? What do you consider the ‘role’ of grandma to be?
