Sponsored by Christian Grandparenting Network
Several years ago, Christian Grandparenting Network (CGN) saw the tremendous need for united prayer among grandparents.
In response to this urgent need, under the leadership of Lillian Penner, the second Sunday of September was designated as the Grandparents’ Day of Prayer. This day coincides with National Grandparents Day in the United States.
Grandparents’ Day of Prayer seeks to raise the awareness of prayer among Christian grandparents and combat Satan’s assault on truth and the gospel message of grace.
There is indeed a full-out war for the hearts, minds, and souls of our children and grandchildren, and spiritual wars need spiritual weapons.
God has given us the power of His Word and prayer as our weapons against the attacks, the darts of the evil one.
Prior to Grandparents Day of Prayer
Here are a couple of ideas for you to use prior to the event.
Join other grandparents by participating in the 30-day Prayer Challenge offered by CGN, which starts on August 14th. This is in preparation for the one-day culminating prayer event on September 11th.
CGN has two videos you could show in your church to get grandparents excited and committed to praying on September 11th.
You could also host a prayer breakfast, brunch, or even a tea to promote Grandparents’ Day of Prayer and include a time of prayer as well.
Another idea is to consider making a list of your grandchildren. Ask the Lord to show you where they need to grow spiritually this year and where they are struggling. Find a verse that you can pray for them this whole next year.
CGN has excellent resources to help you find a verse to pray concerning a specific need such as fear, temptation, or salvation. You can get their free download of verses here or purchase a pack of sturdy bookmark-style, two-sided cards from their store. They have four versions available – a general one, for teens, for parents, and for grandparents.
Their brand new prayer plan (below) was just unveiled, and it starts prior to the event and continues after the event.
10 for 10: Standing Together in Prayer
Between now and September 11th, we encourage grandparents to enlist 9 other grandparenting friends to join them in this endeavor. Then for 10 weeks beginning on Grandparents’ Day of Prayer, this group will pray together.
Each day of the 10-week period will focus on a topic: Sunday = Prayer, Monday = Relationships, Tuesday = Attributes of Christ, Wednesday = Yearning for God, Thursday = Endeavors, Friday = Resistance to Satan’s Attacks, Saturday = Spiritual Growth.
To help with this time of prayer, CGN has put together a booklet outlining the week’s focus. The booklet also provides a daily Scripture to pray, prayer prompt, and space for journaling.

On September 11th – Grandparents Day of Prayer
On September 11th, gather with other grandparents and pray specifically for your grandchildren. Maybe your pastor can also incorporate a dedicated time within the church service to pray for and over grandparents and their grandchildren.
Check out all the great resources here.
Continue Praying After the Event
Prayer focus shouldn’t be just a one-day event but a regular discipline. Why not continue praying for your grandchildren daily? It is a great godly habit! Ask your grandchildren for their requests then let them know you prayed for them.
CGN also has a newly updated 52 Weeks of Prayer resource available. Also, consider hosting a Grandparents@Prayer group. CGN has helpful guidance to get you started.
Conclusion
Prayer is the greatest weapon of our warfare against the ungodly cultural messages and assault on truth that our grandchildren are facing. We encourage you to participate in the Grandparents’ Day of Prayer from CGN.
As Cavin Harper, founder of CGN, says in one of the videos, “It is for the sake of our children’s children.”
Are you ready to get on your knees, humble yourself, seek God’s face, repent of your sin, and intercede on behalf of your children and grandchildren?
Then join in and make plans to pray on September 11th. May God bless you!
